Ephesians 6:17 illustrates: receiving the helmet of salvation is for covering our mind, our mentality, against the negative thoughts shot in by the evil one. Such a helmet, such a covering, is God's salvation. Satan injects threats, worries, anxieties, and other weakening thoughts into our mind. God's salvation is the covering that we take up against all these. Such a salvation is the saving Christ whom we should experience in our daily life / John 16:33.

Symbolic representation: My son experienced his first concussion the summer of 2011, and was taken to the hospital. He decided not to wear his helmet while attempting some stunts at the local skate park. An interesting parallel between the spiritual and physical; not only does wearing a helmet protect the head from physical damage, but putting on the "helmet of salvation" this protects and covers our mind against the negative attacks shot in by the evil one.

Through Christ, God acquired you at a cost, but you inherit God at no cost. God loves us and Christ has accomplished everything for us. Since God’s love is eternal, His love in Christ Jesus is our security. This is our eternal insurance policy.

Having also heard the truth, the Good News that God saves you. And when you believed in Christ, He identified you as His own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom He promised long ago.The Spirit is God’s guarantee that He will give us the inheritance He promised and that He has purchased us to be His own people. He did this so we would praise and glorify Him. – Ephesians 1:13, 14

Symbolic representation: People of all kinds pay their yearly house, vehicle, and life insurance dues, but many do not consider their "eternal insurance policy." This begs the question: What is my eternal destiny? A question that will surely awaken the non-believers curiosity.

Finally, be empowered in the Lord and in the might of His strength. Put on the whole armor of God that you may be able to stand against the stratagems of the devil, For our wrestling is not against blood and flesh but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the world-rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces in the heavenlies. Therefore take up the whole armor of God that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
Stand therefore, having girded your loins with truth and having put on the breastplate of righteousness. And having shod your feet with the firm foundation of the gospel of peace; Besides all these, having taken up the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the flaming darts of the evil one. And receive the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which Spirit is the word of God, By means of all prayer and petition, praying at every time in spirit and watching unto this in all perseverance and petition concerning all the saints. – Ephesians 6:10-18
